Innovative Development - The Hedgehog Sleeper = Type 103/104 (Prototype)

The ‘hedgehog’ sleepers – nicknamed because the ends look like hedgehogs nesting under the rail. The sleepers contain 90% less embedded carbon than timber sleepers and 78% less than those made from concrete. As part of Network Rail’s sustainability strategy, research found that sleepers account for 30 per cent of the carbon embedded within railway infrastructure.

A significant benefit of the sleeper is the improved lateral resistance, comparative tests in consolidated ballast has shown a higher lateral resistance then concrete track sleepers.
